The first documents go back to 5000 years ago. Later the Greeks dug out huge quantities of tufa to build up temples and walls and the space they left became tomb-sites. When the Romans came they used the large underground space as water tanks and with Claudius the waterworks extended for 400 Km.
Claudius waterworks was used till 1884. During the second world war the caves were used as shelters during the bombing of Naples. Naples underworld can be visited starting from Piazza San Gaetano.
